Washing Wool Sweaters

A wool sweater needs its own care decision before it joins a load. Some items are machine washable, while others require hand washing or professional attention. The knit's shape also needs protection after cleaning. Choose a permitted process and remove water gently rather than relying on a fabric name or a reassuring cycle label alone.

Permission comes before the program

Tide's wool guide emphasizes that many wool garments are unsuitable for ordinary machine washing. Check the care label first. For an item explicitly permitted in the machine, use the specified gentle approach and a suitable detergent rather than assuming that a sweater's appearance establishes its washability.

Reduce agitation and distortion

The guide describes cold water, a gentle cycle, and an optional mesh bag as protective measures for machine-washable wool. It also advises pressing out excess moisture instead of wringing and laying the garment flat to dry. These precautions support an allowed method; they do not make an otherwise prohibited washing process suitable.
