Understanding the Hand-Wash Symbol
The hand-wash mark should be interpreted as an instruction for the garment, rather than a suggestion to choose whichever machine program sounds most gentle. Fabric, embellishments, and construction all matter. A washer's hand-wash setting is still a machine process, so check both the clothing label and the appliance manual before treating the two as equivalent.
Similar settings, separate permission
Maytag explains that delicate and hand-wash machine cycles generally use gentle action and low or absent spin. They are intended for suitable sensitive fabrics, but their names do not override a label requiring washing by hand. Always distinguish a machine program from the manual process described on the garment.

Consult both sets of instructions
The washer manual explains model-specific behavior, while the clothing label explains what the item can tolerate. A mesh bag may protect suitable machine-washable pieces from snagging, but fragile embellishments and certain materials can still require another method. The right decision combines the machine's actual operation with the limits of the finished garment.
