GINETEX describes care symbols as information about the maximum permitted treatment of a textile article. The assessment includes more than its main fiber: coloring, finishes, buttons, zips and applied details can influence what care is appropriate. A fabric description alone is therefore not enough to replace the finished garment's label.

The organization also distinguishes care labeling from a guarantee of product quality or complete stain removal. A gentler treatment may be possible, but increasing the severity beyond the stated limit is a different decision. Read the label as guidance about caring for that particular item rather than a general rating of how durable or easy to clean it will be.
