Reading Laundry Care Symbols
Care symbols describe separate operations rather than one universal permission to wash. Start with the basic shape, then read any cross, line, dot, or temperature number that modifies it. A washable item can still require special drying or ironing, so review the complete label before deciding that it belongs with an ordinary laundry load.
Start with the wash tub
The wash-tub symbol describes whether and how a garment can be washed. Marks inside it concern temperature, while lines underneath concern the wash action. A hand in the tub indicates hand washing. These details should be read together rather than treating a temperature mark as permission to use any cycle.

Drying and finishing are separate
A square containing a circle concerns tumble drying, while other square symbols describe natural drying methods. An iron symbol addresses pressing, and a circle relates to professional cleaning. Checking every relevant symbol matters because a garment that can be washed may still need a different drying or finishing method.
