Treating Ink Marks on Fabric

Ink marks can differ with the type of pen, the fabric, and the garment's dye. A solvent or spot treatment should not be used merely because it is popular online. Check compatibility and test a hidden area where appropriate, then wash within the label's limits and inspect the result before moving to a heated drying stage.

Test before applying a solvent

Maytag recommends checking the care label and testing an inconspicuous area before treating ink. Its method uses paper towel and rubbing alcohol applied from the reverse of the stained fabric to help transfer ink away. Particularly delicate materials may be better assessed by a professional cleaner.

Rinse and check the result

After treatment, rinse thoroughly and wash within the garment's permitted temperature range. The guide recommends air drying while evaluating the stain and repeating treatment if needed. Avoid moving directly to the dryer, which can make a remaining mark more difficult to remove. The sequence is controlled treatment followed by inspection, rather than forceful rubbing.
